    Practical guides for signal-led selling

Find better prospects, write outreach with context, and prioritize the people most likely to engage. These practical starting points help sales teams turn scattered activity into a repeatable outbound workflow.

    01 · Find

Build a prospect list around evidence

Better lead generation starts before the search box. Instead of collecting every person who matches a job title, combine stable fit criteria with observable behavior. The result is a smaller list with a clearer reason to act.

    1. 01

      Define the smallest useful ICP

Start with the role, company profile, and business problem that must be true for a conversation to be worthwhile. A narrow working definition is easier to test than a broad market description.

    2. 02

      Choose observable signals

Select three to five behaviors that connect to the problem you solve: engaging with competitor content, discussing a relevant topic, changing roles, hiring in a key function, or returning to the same theme repeatedly.

    3. 03

      Qualify the timing

Ask when the activity happened, how much effort it required, and whether it is part of a pattern. A recent, thoughtful comment usually carries more useful context than an isolated reaction from months ago.

    4. 04

      Attach the next action

Send every qualified lead forward with the signal, why it matters, and the best next step. That context turns a name in a list into a prospect your team can approach with confidence.

    Fit + behavior + timing

Before adding a lead to the queue, make sure you can explain all three parts in one sentence.

Fit: should we sell to them?
    Behavior: what did they do?
    Timing: why reach out now?

    02 · Engage

Turn signal context into a conversation

Strong LinkedIn outreach does not need a long pitch. It needs a credible reason for showing up. Use the prospect’s activity as context, then make the message about the problem they may be exploring rather than the feature you want to sell.

    1. 01

      Observation

Mention one specific activity you genuinely saw. Keep it factual and brief.

    2. 02

      Relevance

Connect that activity to a likely priority without pretending to know more than you do.

    3. 03

      Point of view

Offer one useful insight that shows why the conversation could be worth their time.

    4. 04

      Low-friction question

End with a question that is easy to answer and does not force an immediate sales call.

    Example message

“Hi Maya — saw your comment about reducing manual prospect research. Teams scaling outbound often lose hours finding the right moment to reach out. Curious, is that something your team is working on this quarter?”

    Do

Mention one relevant observation, leave room for uncertainty, and ask a question that can be answered naturally.

    Don’t

List several tracked activities, overstate intent, or turn the first message into a product brochure.

    03 · Prioritize

Score fit, intent, and timing together

A lead score should help a representative decide what to do next, not hide the decision behind a mysterious number. Start with four explainable factors, review the underlying context, and tune the weights as your team learns which signals lead to productive conversations.

A 100-point lead scoring model with factor weights and evaluation criteria.
    FactorWeightWhat to evaluate
ICP fit40 pointsRole, seniority, company size, industry, geography, and ownership of the problem.
Signal strength30 pointsThe effort and specificity behind the activity, from a light reaction to a detailed post or comment.
Recency20 pointsHow recently the signal occurred and whether the timing still supports a relevant follow-up.
Repeated engagement10 pointsWhether the prospect has returned to related topics, creators, competitors, or discussions.

    75–100

    Act now

Strong fit and timely intent. Review the context and personalize outreach.

    50–74

    Nurture

Promising but incomplete. Watch for another signal or add useful context first.

    Below 50

    Monitor

Keep tracking, but protect your team’s time until fit or intent becomes clearer.

Treat this model as a starting point. Review replies, qualified meetings, and closed opportunities regularly, then adjust the weights to reflect the evidence in your own sales motion.

Your next best prospects are already showing intent.
